Art as Disability Resistance
Hidden Voices is a major educational initiative launched by the NYC Department of Education in partnership with the Museum of the City of New York, designed to bring the stories of historically marginalized communities into K-12 classrooms across the city. The project centers the voices of women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, and people with disabilities who have shaped history but rarely appear in standard curriculum. I was commissioned to expand the initiative's reach into disability justice by designing a 5th grade mini-unit, Art as Disability Resistance, a 4-lesson sequence that used mixed-media collage, artist study, and gallery walks to help students explore disability pride, resistance, and identity through art. The unit was released citywide across all NYC public schools, reaching over 1,800 schools as a model for how disability rights education can be integrated across content areas.
Focus question: How can we use protest art to challenge stigmas and negative stereotypes surrounding disability and provide alternative perspectives on what it means to be disabled?
